In act one, we see Mick sitting in the room staring blankly towards the audience. The pace of the play is quite slow here. We see that Harold Pinter is setting the pace of the play to let the audience adjust to it. When noises of people nearing the room are heard, Mick leaves the room. This shows us the characteristic of most people who are afraid of new company.

Aston enters the room with Davies.We learn that Davies is a tramp whom Aston had saved from getting into a fight. Aston is courteous as he offers Davies a seat. Davies results to excessive talking.
