A democratic country in the making, Malaysia tries be like the more powerful countries. Ironically, just like the United States, equality does not apply to everyone. Formed in 1963, Malaysia started to take shape through a federation of the former British colonies of Malaya and Singapore, including the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak on the northern coast of Borneo ("Malaysia" 1). Situated at one of the great maritime crossroads of the world, the Malay Peninsula has long been the meeting place of peoples from other parts of Asia ("Facts" 1). Malaysia's democracy is based on the British system, which means one will not have a representative in the parliment if they get 49.99% or less of votes.
