I. Non Specific Immune Response: what body does regardless of problem, to put into place
A. Species Resistance: certain species are resistant to specific diseases (mammals getting rabies, not fish)
B. 1st Line of Defense
- Mechanical Barriers: skin, hair, ciliated mucus, mucus that lines different oranges, physically blocks
- Chemical Barriers: tears (watery eyes protect, contain lysozyme, tear cell walls), lysozymes in saliva, sweat (low pH of 2-7, acidic), stomach acid (kills bacteria from food), normal flora (bacteria that normally lives on you) makes acid/waste products that kill bacteria, ear wax
- Inflammation: swelling, injured tissue contains mast cells that release chemicals called histamine that trigger the inflammatory response, attracts white blood cells, cause blood vessels to dilate and leak, causes redness, heat, insolating pathogens
