A very defining point in the history of the world is the introduction of absolute monarchs into the political scene sometime in the late 1500's. An absolute monarch can be defined as a king or queen that has complete control over all aspects of his or her country. Some of the most widely known and powerful monarchs of the past are King Phillip II of Spain, Peter the Great of Russia, and Frederick William, The Great Elector, of Prussia. Any of these three can be argued to be the most dominant monarch in history, but in my opinion, Frederick William is undoubtedly the greatest. Frederick laid the foundations of the Prussian state, developed a strong army, and worked exceptionally hard to unite all of Prussia's scattered territories.
