Summary: Essay on the devices used in "The Ghostway."
In The Ghostway Jim Chee uses his knowledge of Navajo customs to solve the crime or give him more hints that lead him to other things. When Jim Chee discovered the burial site of Albert Gorman, he noticed that in a normal burial the "hair should have been washed clean in yucca suds, combed and brushed." (29). This was a part of the burial that the Navajo's do save their hogan from the ghost, and so the sprit would arrive purified. Jim Chee was questioned. Why hadn't he saved him hogan, and why did he not ensure Albert a safe trip to the afterlife? He concluded that something had compelled Ashie Begay to rush, resulting him to do nonchalant job on the burial.
The first time that Chee truly went inside of the hogan, he found what he had been looking for all along: "Ashie Begay's Four Mountain Bundle...
