For many centuries, nations were protected extensively by armies of infantry. As the nation increases in size, the movement of these troops became increasingly important. Dirt roads could not withstand passage of many troops or many horses. The roads were deteriorated quickly by the weather. Traveling in deep mud seriously impeded the troop's progress. Calculations were constantly inaccurate; therefore, they were rarely made. Campaign planning was impossible.
With paved roads, troop scan move quickly up to twenty-five miles per day. Weather was not a factor. Paved roads do not deteriorate; they were so secure, that repair was almost never necessary.
