Many of the Japanese traditions involve two main things; food and entertainment. Kabuki is one of Japan's traditional theatrical arts. Its starts goes back to the late 16th century and has continued to evolve into what it is today. Though not as popular as it once was in the past, the Kabuki Theater is still widely popular among the Japanese, and is still drawing large audiences. One of the more unusual features of kabuki art, and perhaps the most significant and unique, is the fact that it has no female actresses. All the female roles are played by male impersonators known as onnagata. The kabuki actors back in its early stages were principally women, and with the increasing popularity of kabuki, many of the actresses began to attract "undue attention" from male audience members.
