Ice is the frozen state of water, it occupies nine percent more volume than water and can be very destructive. It is responsible for the creation of landforms and altering of landscapes. Glaciers are large masses of ice that have been under pressure for long periods of time and are compressed with rock and debris from the surrounding areas. This essay will explore periglacial environments, which are located on the edges of glacial environments in warmer regions and lower latitudes. Periglacial regions are distinguished by the presence of ground ice and of landforming processes that depend on its partial melting. Primarily permafrost will be examined as it is central to periglacial processes. Pingoes, nivations, ice lenses and patterned ground are periglacial landforms that will be looked in order of size to see what role ice plays in creating them.
