Every year, approximately one hundred thousand people develop Epilepsy in the United States (Weaver 7), making it the second most common neurological disorder after a stroke (The Epilepsy Foundation of Southeastern Pennsylvania). Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that results in an individual experiencing multiple seizures (Weaver 2). Such a seizure occurs when a specific group of brain cells has an unplanned release of electrical energy (Growing Up With Epilepsy 3). If a person only experiences one seizure and another seizure never reoccurs, this does not make the person Epileptic (Weaver 2). During a typical seizure, the individual may experience muscle spasms, changes in conscienceness (Epilepsy Foundation of Southeastern Pennsylvania) shallow breathing, and foaming at the mouth (Seizure Chart). A typical seizure will last between a few seconds and a few minutes depending on the form of the seizure (Epilepsy Foundation of Southeastern Pennsylvania ).
