Civil War: Northwest Vs. Northeast
Summary: Essay describes the tie between the northwest and northeast during pre-Civil War times.
The tie between the northeast and northwest became very strong for several reasons. One was the fact that the northeast shifted from cottage industry to the factory system. Another reason was the immigrants. The immigrants came over in masses and consumed any available employment for a very low wage. This drove the "natives" to move west and become farmers. This set up the northwest as commercial farmers and the northeast as an industrial region. They then depended on each other for what the other had to offer. The northeast depended on the northwest to feed the workers in the mills, and the northwest needed the technologies produced in the northeastern mills to produce the food for the workers in the mills.
