The majority of children from London were evacuated to other parts of Great Britain where there was less risk of bombing and children would be able to live safely. However by 1940 many of these children had returned back home to London.

The main reason for this was that the threat of severe bombing on London did not take place and this meant that many parents and mothers felt cheated that their children had been sent away unnecessarily. This period was known as the "Phoney War".

The countryside held a totally different way of life for the evacuated children. Socially, morally and health wise. The children were often billeted into "bad" homes with alcoholics and adult bullies who subjected them to beatings and abuse.
