Many people in society believe that spanking a child is a form of child abuse. Several people feel that any type of harsh physical contact with a child should be classified as child abuse. In today's society groups such as Child Protective Services and Social Services, help to prevent and soon eliminate what is considered by many as child abuse.

Upon examining this issue closer, one can consider the opposing side to this issue. Spanking can promote discipline and allows for less child rebellion. This type of discipline also teaches the child respect for his or her parents, elders, and society in general. Spanking should not be considered child abuse unless the spanking comes from somewhere else other than discipline. If the spanking comes from feelings of hatred or anger, then it should be considered abuse; otherwise, spanking is just a form of discipline.
