The Iconography of Power
Summary: Ancient art uses iconography to display power.
The power and authority of a person or group of people was very important theme in Ancient Art. Power could be displayed in many methods. Changing the image of the body in size, beauty, youthfulness, and physique were propaganda tactics used. The way a person was shown was also important. The pose, location, and apparel of the person being idealized have significance to the power being displayed. The setting and subject matter of the work also convey power. The works The Standard of Ur, The Victory Stele of Naram-Sin, and The Triumph of Shapur over Valerian use these tactics to convey power and authority.
