Othello: Different Readings of the Play
Summary: Essay discusses different readings of William Shakespeare's "Othello."
"Every new reading of Othello implies a reconsideration of the ways audiences value the play and respond to it." In this way, Shakespeare may not be the only author in the creation of Othello's themes and meanings. And, it is therefore the different interpretations made by the responder that contribute to the production of the meanings of Othello also. This suggested "death of the author", subsequently makes the varying interpretations dependent on the responder's own experiences, pre knowledge and what he or she values. In Othello, two types of different interpretations out of several others include a feminist's perspective and a psycho analytical perspective.
From the feminist's perspective, the responder will recognise the stereotypical views of woman in Shakespeare's time.
