Since the end of World War II, in 1945, and the dropping of the atom bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan has begun developing a place among the leading powers of the world. Immediately following the war, Japan was run by the American government. Initially, the idea was to re-establish Japan's economy, politics, and educational institutions to ensure that militarism would not emerge. In 1947, a new constitution established a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system. Shortly after, the Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP, was created and marked its place as the main political power. The government controlled the economy through its Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) which helped spur Japan's economy. Industries, such as textiles, were not encouraged, whereas "leading edge technologies" were promoted, and beginning in the 1960's, Japan began to increase economically.
