In his last attempt to urge young Scipio to accomplish all that the youthful man is meant to do, Scipio Africanus the elder says to his grandson, "Hanc tū exerce in optimīs rēbus!" (209). Africanus conveys how the younger Scipio must involve himself in the best pursuits (optimīs rēbus). For these pursuits will lead to young Scipio's ultimate fate. Scipio the elder describes how the best cares are concerning the safety of Rome (salūte patriae). In other words, Scipio's duty is to ensure the well-being of his homeland and protect the citizens of Rome.
Indeed, if Scipio does defend Rome's welfare he will "fly more quickly" (vēlōcius pervolābit) to Heaven's portals.
