Founding Differences
Summary: Essay discusses the differences between the colonies in the United States and the colonies in England.
Colonists in the 1600's attempted to escape subjugation in England with hopes of instituting sound civilizations in the New World. Although colonists descended from the same English background, it was clear by the mid 1600's that established areas in the South varied from regions in the North. Although the geography of the Chesapeake and New England regions was an important cause of the difference in each territory's' development, it was the extreme variation in colonists' motives that was the main reason these two areas evolved into two dissimilar societies.
The English had fled from their homeland in 1607, the same year Jamestown was established on the banks of the James River.
