Enchoridion Discussion
Opinion, there were many arguments that said we controlled our opinion and others that were mixed, but I have to agree with the fact that you can only control your opinion to a certain extent. While at the same time I believe that you should not leave yourself open to be swayed so easily. I do believe that you can follow your pursuits and be all that you try to be, but while recognizing that we all have our physical limitations. Most of the class seemed to agree on this. As for desire, I think that you cannot control your desires, but rather how you act upon them and all but a few seemed to be in agreement with this. Last but certainly not least, aversion. I agree that much like desire, you cannot control this, but you can control how you act upon it. Everyone seemed to agree on this also, but we found a loophole. The loophole is that if you do not like someone upon meeting them, but later get to know them and come to like them; that would be considered taking control of it.
On to that which we do not control, body. Everyone seemed to agree that you can control physical movement, but natural functions; such as, bowel movements were out of our realm of control. I think that everyone in class agreed that I can't make my binder jump; therefore, I do not control my property. Everyone agreed that you can only control your reputation to a certain extent and that would be, how you present yourself. To end this whole thing, command. It is not possible to control what others will command you to do, but it is possible to control whether you follow it or not.
