The Spanish American War started as an attempt to try and free Cuba from Spain control. The war was also referred to by John Hay as that plendid little war because of the impact it was having on American Citizens. During the rough years before the eal war had started Cuba was overrun by the Spanish that did not allow the freedom the Cuban government felt they were entitled too. As the years went on more violence spread through the country of Cuba and tension mounted on countries like the United States to help and get involved. The Spanish rule over Cuba was extremely brutal but extraordinary ineffective. Eventually Cuban leaders used the United States as a base of operations and a supplier of goods.
