The authoritarian structure of the French society during the 17th and 18th centuries led many philosophers to write and, encourage change to the structure of society for the benefit of its people. From these ideas sparked thoughts of revolutionary change all over Europe. The French Revolution focused on the rights and identity of the people and their culture. Soon these revolutionary ideas of self-government, and political and economic autonomy, spread across the European continent. Consequently, a century of political and social upheaval commenced as well as the universal adaptation of constitutional governments. These events of nationalism played a major role in molding the current structures of government and society, as we know it today.
