Aquatic Ecosystems
Summary: Describes the creation of a model aquatic ecosystem. Explores what caused its failure. Considers how mistakes could have been avoided.
Our aquatic ecosystem collapsed few weeks after we made it. The ecosystem was successful for the first two weeks, but almost every species in the ecosystem died between the third and the fourth week.
The main cause of the failure in the ecosystem was that the aquatic plants received a little amount of sunlight. The plants were not able to undergo photosynthesis due to the lack of sunlight. Therefore, the amount of oxygen and glucose produced by the algae was low. The level of oxygen in the water also decreased, as the number of plants decreased, which caused the biological oxygen demand to increase. The less quantity of food and oxygen caused the snails and the decomposers to die because it was out of their range of tolerance. There was a rapid growth in the population of snails until they reached their carrying capacity, and their population reduced...
