The movie began with the village people talking about a secret meeting that was to be held that night at the old church, presumably about resisting the government's seizure of their land. However, an informant told the soldiers where this meeting was to take place and they attacked the old church. Rosa and Enrique's dad was killed by the soldiers. Rosa and Enrique then return the next day to find that the soldiers have taken their mom. Enrique decides that it is the time to go north(into the United States) and goes to a friend for information. Rosa learns of his plans and decides that she wants to go with him because he is the only family that she's got.
