The book Stepping on the Cracks takes place during the time of World War II in the town of College Hill. The book is focused on three characters, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Gordy. Margaret and Elizabeth are best friends and also neighbors. Gordy is the school bully and has only two friends, Doug and Toad. Margaret, Elizabeth, and Gordy have one thing in common; they each have brothers fighting in the war against Hitler. Every day Margaret and Elizabeth get picked on by Gordy and his friends.
