What Is Tone
Summary: Discusses the use of tone in literature. Describes how tone has the ability to unconsciously affect the audience and allows the author to snatch the audience into his hand and mold them to his will.
While shopping in the mall, a mother and daughter observe an outfit hanging on display. It is a nice dress, extremely low-cut, designed with the enjoyment of the opposite sex in mind, but made with obvious care and expensive materials. The daughter sees the dress, and her eyes instantly light up by the thought of her boyfriend seeing her in the dress. "Oh, this dress is amazing. It's so beautiful. Just look at this gorgeous, soft velvet," she exclaims as she admires the dress. The mother, on the other hand, thinking about her daughter's reputation and maybe even her chastity, has a dubious look on her face. "Well, considering the high-class price on this thing, you would think that it would make you look classier than a corner prostitute.
