Ivan Denisovich's temperature is 99.2 degrees, so Vdoyushkin, a young medical assistant, rejects his request for a work exemption. Ivan Denisovich walks out, knowing has to tough out another day. "How can you expect a man who's warm to understand a man who's cold"" (pg 19). Denishovish, also known as Shukhov, thinks to himself as he leaves the clinic, about why he was rejected a day. The young medical assistant would not have understand since he was sitting in warm corridors while Shukhov had to work in the cold. The difference between was far beyond what the assistant could imagine. Working in the cold was not as easy as it looked for Shukhov. Especially now with his fever things might be a little tougher.
