Susan Frost spent all of her childhood in Charleston until she went to Saint Mary's in North Carolina, which was an all female Episcopal boarding school. She attended for two years and then returned to Charleston. At this time, Susan lived a basic life as a southern woman. The probable key factor that changed her way of living was the hurricane of August 27, 1893.
