The French-English Relationship During the 20th Century in Canada
Summary: Argues that WWI, WWII, the Quiet Revolution, and the October Crisis are the four main reason for the changes of French-English relationship in Canada during the twentieth century.
The French-English relations have always been hard since the English conquest on French in late 1800s. In the twentieth century, French-English relations have further deteriorated. There are three main caused of the destruction of the French-English relations which are the conscriptions during WWI and WWII, the Quiet Revolution, the October Crisis.
The conscription in WWI was the first major main cause that worsen the English-French relations. The French never wanted go to war. When the first World War began, Canada as a part of British Empire was automatically in war with Britain. This already upset French, because they had no ties with Britain,. They don`t need to fight for another country. In 1917 before the conscription, Sir Robert Borden asked the Canadians to vote "yes " or "no for Government`s approving for the conscription. Almost all the French Canadians voted "no" while a lot of English voted "yes...
