Secession and Its Role in the Civil War
Summary: This essay provides facts to prove that the American Civil War was the inevitable culmination of the American belief in the right of secession. References the book "April 1985" by Jay Winik.
From the establishment of the first colony by the pilgrims and until the winding down of the Civil War in the year 1865 secessionism had not only been a belief of the people but over that time it had developed into a tradition. "A tradition that was older than America." (Winik Pg. 16). With this stated, it is not difficult to understand that the United States underwent a time period full of secessionism. One of the events that jumpstarted the belief in secessionism was the U.S. constitution. A large flaw of the constitution was that it did not require the United States to be a nation joined by the different states found inside it. This flaw kept the separate states independent from each other and led to each state establishing their own governments, taxes, postal systems etc...
