Summary: Provides an extensive analysis of the Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis. Analyzes author Philip Pullman's dislike of Lewis and his work. Compares Pullman's text, His Dark Materials to Narnia. Considers how the two authors convey their contrasting religious attitudes and values, and questions if this provides a reasonable basis for Pullman's dislike of Lewis.
I chose to write about the Chronicles of Narnia for the simple reason that it has been my favourite story since I was a young child and I have re-read it every year since it was given to me. However, as I got older, I began to see that my favourite story could be taken on two levels. There was the "fairy story", fantasy level, but if I delved in deeper, I could find myself reading a Christian based saga. This was helped by the fact that I grew up in a Church of England primary school, and the Church always had a presence in my young life.

The Chronicles take a magical country, Narnia, through its creation, all through its own history to its destruction, and to a "Judgement day", when some pass into "Aslan's country" and others are swallowed up by Aslan's shadow.
