European Colonizers
Summary: Explores reasons why European countries began acquiring colonies all over Africa in the late 18th and early 19 centuries. Details the primary motives for establishing colonies, religious, economic, military, prestigious and pride but the main reason was usually economic.
Known for their great power some European countries started acquiring colonies all over Africa in short time periods. All this countries looked at Africa as a market for their manufactured goods and as a potential source of raw materials. By becoming more increasingly involved in Africa's economical affair they gained more political control over the region, allowing them to "make the calls" of any political and social aspects. In general, European countries establish colonies in Africa to promote their own national self interest out of economic, military, religious and culture.
The division of Africa among half a dozen European countries was the most striking event of the 1900's, this event was known as the Scramble of Africa, which resulted in nearly all of Africa becoming part of Europe's colonial empires.
