Colonial Society and Economy
Summary: Explores differences between Virginia and Massachusetts during the colonial era. Discusses each colony's culture, society and economy.
The colonies of Virginia and Massachusetts were so different in the 17th and 18th century that they might as well not have been affiliated with the same country. With mercantilism in effect, they both served and depended on their mother country, England. Virginia's economy was based solely on agriculture while Massachusetts' was more involved with manufacturing. Their religions differed too, as Anglicans were found in the South and Puritans in the north. Thus, the society was different, especially since the South brought in a lot of West African slaves and the North, Europeans. Europeans fled to our country to escape religious prosecution and to forge a new Mecca for Christians. This idea of a "city upon a hill" has definitely evolved but it still is in play.
