Should junk food be available in schools? This is a question which has been headlining many newspapers in the United States recently as some schools bring McDonalds restaurants into their schools. This is to augment the insubstantial funding provided by the government. 20% of schools in the United States now have a fast food outlet in the school (Bird, 2002). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has defined junk food as "foods which provide calories primarily through fats or added sugars and have minimal amounts of vitamins and minerals." McDonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks, as well as many school canteens provide foods which fall into this category. This is a factor in the obesity epidemic which is so prominent in our busy modern society where children play video games and eat `take out' more than once a week. To feed them junk food at school every day could be disastrous...
