Kaboom! Visions of nuclear explosions excite the mind with ideas of top-secret missions and high-risk situations. Bombarding the uranium atoms in a fission process to create nuclear energy is one direct result of nuclear engineers working to benefit mankind. These and many other exciting things are waiting for people who enter the field of nuclear engineering. One of these nuclear engineers, Eurico Fermi, demonstrated on December 2, 1942, that a pile of graphite blocks containing lumps of natural uranium would cause a self-sustaining nuclear reaction when stacked to a predictable minimum size.
