William Blake has written this poem in 1791, in the end of the so-called Georgian times. To properly look at the situation, it is vital to know that in the end of the 18th century London was the largest city in the world with probably the most miscellaneous population making a total inhabitant number higher that one million. While the eastern part of the city was consisting of slums and other poor housing, the western districts were highly aristocratic and had many rich housings, as well as small palaces, built there. The mortality rates were high and the living conditions, like hygiene and nutrition levels, were on very low standards, therefore the main reason of the increasing population was the high migration rate.
