Jane Jacobs and the Coming Dark Age

A "dark age" is defined as, "an era of ignorance, superstition, or social chaos or repression." A Dark Age is what Jane Jacobs says is the biggest hazard facing our society. A Dark Age occurs when not only a culture is lost, but when the people do not remember that it has been lost. Things such as writing, printing and the Internet lead us to believe that we are preserving our culture through documentation and words. However, because culture is transmitted through example and word of mouth, writing and pictures do nothing to carry it on. If the people of past generations ignore their cultures, the culture will die and not be remembered. Jacobs refers to this as mass amnesia.
