Consequences of Bloody Sunday
The Widgery inquiry had been an inquiry into the deaths of 14 marchers on the day that was later referred to as Bloody Sunday. The inquiry left no doubt that the troops were not guilty. At the time many British stood fast to their belief that the inquiry was perfectly good, however, today even the British government admit that it was a white wash- hence the current Saville inquiry. When the verdict was given the IRA was given a bitter-sweet result. Although the troops and the government were found free of blame, the British government was seen not being evenhanded in its approach for justice for Catholics in Ireland, this was a boost for their propaganda.
