Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdames was a martyr for the poor in El Salvador who often spoke out and denounced many injustices concerning the El Salvador's military and government. To the poor of El Salvador, Romero was someone to listen to their cries, to acknowledge their suffering, and to speak the truth of their situation to the world. According to the Christian communities in 1986, "Monsignor was the greatest apostle of the poor in Latin America during this century." Romero risked his own life trying to free Salvadorans from the isolation of the government which caused 75,000 Salvadorean to be killed. Because of his efforts to eliminate this violence, Romero was assassinated.
