Edith Wharton's novella Ethan Frome is a romantic tragedy centered on the life of the title character. The anonymous narrator relates Ethan's tale after a brief encounter with him. The narrator first learns of Ethan's tragic life by talking with Mrs. Ned Hale and Harmon Gow. However, they are only able to give the narrator limited information. As a result, the narrator is not able to learn the complete story of Ethan Frome. However, after he spends the night at the Frome house, he begins to piece together his own version of the tragic events of Ethan's life.
