Triage is a novel written by Scott Anderson, who retells the accounts of a war photographer amidst the war in Kurdistan. The novel depicts Mark, who returns home to New York alive without his best friend, fellow colleague Colin. Mark falls into a deep depression and almost ceases to function with his deception of the truth fueling an inevitable breakdown. Mark was saved, and chosen to be worthy of life while others perished by the hands of Doctor Talzani. Mark struggles to come to terms with the "lottery" of triage that decides the lives of the hurt and injured. "Some live, some die" becomes the motto of Talzani and the essence of triage. As for Mark this becomes the only way to view war as he carries "the guilt of the survivor."
