The Function of Crenshaw's Analytical Theories
Summary: Describes the function of Crenshaw's theories of analysis on other writers who write on terrorism. Argues that it is valuable and important to analyze what we hear and read and try to make judgments about what we hear, that will not only lead to a better understanding of what we are hearing but also a better understanding of the people who speak to us.
There is a hidden battle in today's world over the lexicon of the populous. Much as in Orwell's 1984, he who controls the words of the people can control the will of the people. That is why when looking at today's tenuous political climate it is important to understand how the ever present, but utterly unspecific, term "terrorism," operates as a tool in the world vocabulary. It is not only important to understand what we would like the word to mean, but also how those in control of the news and politics use the word. Martha Crenshaw acknowledges the power of this word in saying, "terrorism is a political label, it is an organizing concept that both describes the phenomenon as it exists and offers a moral judgment."
