An American jurist named Louis Dembitz Brandeis, was an influential figure in the progressive era because of his many contributions to political science. He was one of the most famous justices of the United States Supreme Court, known for his open-minded views and his unorthodox opinions.
He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. After attending public schools in Louisville, he studied at the Annen Realschule in Dresden, Germany. At the age of 18 he entered Harvard Law School, graduating in 1877 and he practiced law in St Louis and Boston from 1879-1916.
Brandeis became known as "the people's attorney" for taking on cases, often without pay, which fought against companies with excesses of money such as the insurance industry and public utilities. He opposed (1907-13) the monopoly of transportation in New England and successfully argued (1910-14) before the Interstate Commerce Commission against railroad-rate increases.
