Examining Themes from A Tale of Two Cities

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" Dickens states in his opening sentence of A Tale of Two Cities. His elaborate writing attracted many people during the Victorian period and continues to attract people today. Throughout the novel, Charles Dickens weaves themes of resurrection and mans inhumanity to man, as he paints a picture of hatred that engulfed France and England during this time.

In the entire novel the theme of resurrection is very evident. One example is after being "buried alive for 18 years", Dr. Mannette has been resurrected from a life of hopelessness until his sanity and will is rekindled by his daughter Lucie. Later in the story, Dr. Mannette repays Lucie by saving her husband, Charles Darnay, just as she saved him years before from a life of insanity.
