Beloved, A Character Analysis
Summary: Analyzes Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved. Provides a character study of Beloved. Examines her struggle and significance in the novel.
In Toni Morrison's, Beloved, the character Beloved plays a huge role of significance because she is thought to be the reincarnation of Seth's baby daughter, whom she murdered, Crawling already? Girl. Sethe murdered her young daughter to prevent her from the horrid experience of slavery yet to come for Crawling already? Girl. Crawling already? Girl being sent back to Sethe in the form of Beloved was a gift to Sethe. Imagine having to kill you child to prevent them from living a captive life. Sethe did not want to kill her daughter but she felt that killing her was the only way for her to be free. Beloved was sent to her and Denver, when Sethe was no longer a slave. Beloved was Sethe's gift because she was sent to her when Sethe could actually take care of her and give her the attention she needed. The thing that I found to be quite strange about Beloved was that she was a woman with the intelligence of a one year old child. I feel that this has its significance also because being that Sethe did not want to kill her but she felt that she had to, Sethe still kept her memories alive. By doing so, Beloved finally did come back but she came back in the form of an adult. To me, that is saying that she is her, she never left but she is still a child. Beloved played an important role in Denver's life, also. Denver is Sethe's teenage daughter, whom is always lonesome and craving attention so she finds an awkward friendship with a ghost haunting the house. Paul D shows up and scares away the ghost. Denver is now alone. Then Beloved is discovered. Denver and Beloved formed a bond. The bond that they would have formed if Sethe had not killed Crawling already? Girl. The two had become very close. Eventually, Denver began to warn Beloved about getting too close to Sethe because there is no telling what she might do after what she has already done. I think that Denver is also a little jealous of the mother daughter bond between Sethe and Beloved. She wants Beloved all to herself because she wants a companion. She wants someone to confide in and to love.
