The poem “Valentine” is written by Carol Ann Duffy. The romantic title suggests hearts and roses, the colour red and maybe music; all symbols commonly associated with the word valentine. However, expectations are certainly not fulfilled. From line one any preconceptions the title may have induced are abruptly dispelled. Duffy makes use of an extended metaphor, naming her love an onion and although this may sound dubious at first, the powerful imagery employed throughout is surprisingly convincing. The poem in itself is enjoyable to read but it also becomes evident that Duffy is making a statement as to what love really is. It’s more valuable than any gift, more beautiful than any rose.
