Summary: A basic plot summary of "The Fellowship of the Ring," by J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Fellowship of the ring begins with merry-making, as Bilbo Baggins (the Hobbit) throws a combined Birthday party for himself and his cousin, Frodo. Bilbo announces at the gathering that he will be leaving Bag End (his home in the Shire) to Frodo. When he returns home he is confronted by Gandalf the Grey (a wizard and old friend), who insists Bilbo give up his ring, that makes its wearer invincible when worn, which he acquired from a previous adventure. Although Bilbo knows he must part with it, a strange feeling of reluctance washes over him. Only at the pressuring of Gandalf does he let it go, and soon after he embarks upon his new and last adventure, never to return to Bag End again. Shortly following Bilbo's departure, Frodo returns home. Gandalf gives him the Ring, and cautions him not to wear it and to keep it...
