John Archibald Wheeler was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 9, 1911. His parents, Dr. Joseph Lewis Wheeler and Mabel Archibald Wheeler, were both librarians. Then was transferred down to the new Jacksonville, Florida Library in 1911. His dad was there for only 6 years then moved to Youngstown Ohio. The school that he first attended did not have any grades below 1st so that is where he entered. His teacher insisted that he write with his right hand even though he new he was left handed. He also recalls school during war time and how the schools made him say the Pledge of Allegiance.(Wheeler pg71) His parents didn't like the idea; they thought it came too close to religion in the school.
