The Scarlet Letter is a romantic love story. The essays by Ernest Sandeen and Joel Porte both support this thesis. In, "The Scarlet Letter as a Love Story" by Ernest Sandeen, his thesis coincides with mine. He believes that for the longest time people have interpreted The Scarlet Letter as a book about sin and sinners, and not a love story, but Sandeen is able to show this book in a different light. "The Dark Blossom of Romance" by Joel Porte, he states that pain and suffering blossom into moral truth. Romance in The Scarlet Letter, isn't the romance that we see in movies, but it was a period of backlash to the realism. It was seeing nature as the primal power that couldn't be tamed.
