Throughout history the ideal government has been theorized and tested in order of finding the most efficient means of governing. Many different party systems coincide with each other in order to establish a form of government worthy enough for the people in which it governs. The United States two party system is one of the older and more stable party systems. It has survived economic upheavals, a civil war as well as many other obstacles that was thrown at in during its early period.

The two party system though young, has proven itself extensively making the most progress in the history of the world. Goldman states "One of the advantages of a two-party system is the psychological value of an operation which produces a majority on Election Day," Pg. 29.
