Abstinence Teaching in Schools - Which Is the Way to Go?
Summary: A persuasive essay showing the importance of teaching Abstinence-Plus programs(comprehensive) in schools, compared to strict Abstinence-Only programs.
By the time they reach high school, most students have been taught some form of sexuality education. In the past, most methods of these teaching programs have included the education of abstinence, as well as methods for those teens that choose to have sex and thus need to be aware of the consequences and how to protect themselves. This method has formerly been referred to as "abstinence-plus" teaching, or the "comprehensive" method (Collins). The recent debate has been over whether or not to switch the teaching curriculum to a strict abstinence-only education program. This would mean that no information pertaining to safer-sex would be provided for those teens who decide not to remain abstinent.
