In one of the most costly and disastrous campaigns of World War I, British, French, Australian, and New Zealand forces poured ashore the Gallipoli beachhead on April 25, 1915. The aim was to swiftly remove any lingering opposition and then proceed to invade mainland Turkey and seize control of the Dardanelles Strait. Britons perception of the Turks was one of discontentment and many English commanders held the fighting ability of vermin above that of the Turkish soldier's ability to fight. Many of the officers involved in the planing of the invasion had no idea the ferocious punishment they would receive by an ill-equipped ill-informed determined enemy.
